Documenting part of the Christchurch CBD deconstruction/demolition has fallen to Com Technology with deployment of time-lapse cameras inside the red zone.
Commissioned by CERA (Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority) to capture the piece-meal deconstruction of a multi-storey building in Hereford St, the task has grown to include the capturing the construction of the temporary Cashel St mall precinct.
Each location is remote, requiring set-and-forget, maintenance free operation.
“The only attention each camera gets is a weekly visit to change out the memory cards, check battery condition and clean the lens,” says Lance Hastie, business principal.
“It’s a little hard to describe the conditions at each location, but the quantity of dust on the gear at the end of each week says it’s rough.”
Using two different camera types, one has a variable lens to frame just the building while the other is a very wide fixed view that incorporates the street scene, nearby buildings and sky view.
“The images are stunning and I guess reflects CERA’s commitment to get access to the best spot for the job. Challenges have included lighting, including working in to sunlight. But there are ways and means of still getting stunning results – and that’s the feedback preliminary video clips have evoked.
“Each project will be edited in to video form, with one being prepared to feature at the launch function for the re-opening of the next part of the original CBD.”
